TV Subscriptions - Which is Best?
Posted 30/08/2016 by BrightHouse Team
With so many options to choose from, it can be hard to know what to go for if you’ve never tried a TV subscription service before. We’ve taken a look at some of the most popular TV packages around so you can see what’s available and what might be best for you.
Pro – Great original TV series.
Con – More limited selection of recent movies.
One of the most popular TV streaming services, Netflix started off as a mail-order DVD rental company back in 1998. Now for a monthly fee you get access to thousands of TV shows and films streamed directly to a wide range of devices. The selection of films is updated regularly with new releases, and there are some fantastic original TV series made by Netflix such as Stranger Things, and Orange is the New Black.
Where can I watch? You can watch Netflix content via an app on any smart TV, or via a games console or your smartphone or tablet as long as you have an internet connection. It’s best to only use it over WiFi, though, as it could get very expensive or quickly use up your data allowance on mobile. You can also watch through a browser on your computer.
How much does it cost? You can get a month free to try the service, then it’s £5.99 for the basic package, or you can get HD content at £7.49 a month, or Ultra HD for £8.99.
Pro – Large selection of recent films.
Con – Not all content available with the standard package.
Once known as Lovefilm, Amazon Instant Video offers thousands of TV shows and films streamed directly over the internet just as with Netflix. It has some of its own TV shows too, such as Mr Robot and Top Gear, and adds recent film releases to its catalogue regularly. It also includes HD content as standard on many titles.
Where can I watch? On your computer, smartphone or tablet, or through a wide variety of games consoles. Also available through Smart TV apps, or smart plug in devices such as Amazon Fire.
How much does it cost? £5.99 a month for a limited selection of content. You can rent individual titles or series as you go, or you can buy an Amazon Prime subscription for £79 a year (which works out at £6.58 per month) to get access to everything, plus free one-day delivery on most products from Amazon.
Pro – Newest movie premiers.
Con – Expensive to get access to everything.
This TV streaming service comes from Sky, and gives you three options for TV, movies, and sport. The Entertainment Pass gives you shows from 11 channels you can’t get on Freeview, with over 250 boxsets. The Sky Movies package, as you’d expect, gives you access to movies, with many new releases before other services get them. There’s also a Kids pass for on demand kids shows, and a sports package that gives you access to Sky Sports channels for a day or week at a time.
Where can I watch? On your computer, smartphone, or tablet, or a smart TV or plug-in device, or on your PlayStation 3 or 4, or an Xbox 360 or One.
How much does it cost? Each pass is priced separately, and you’ll need to buy them all to get all the content. TV: £6.99 a month. Movies: £9.99 a month. Kids TV: £2.99 a month. Sports channels: £6.99 a day, £10.99 for a week, or £31.99 for a month.
