Gaming Spotlight: Summer 2013
Posted 22/08/2013 by BrightHouse Team
The school holidays may be in full swing, but there’s no sign of the gaming industry taking a summer break. While fans and retailers alike gear up for massive Christmas console releases from Xbox One and PlayStation 4, there are still plenty of quality games in the pipeline for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the WII U. Here are a few highlights from the past few weeks.
Saints Row IV
The Saints Row series started life as a fairly run-of-the-mill Grand Theft Auto clone, but over the years the series has found its own unique brand of absurd, often surreal humour. This fourth in the series sees you take on the role of the American President, fending off an alien invasion while trapped in a Matrix-esque simulated reality. It’s bizarre, childish and a lot of fun.
Released Friday 23rd August for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC
If you prefer a slightly gentler pace of life, the third instalment of the Pikmin series for WII U offers more low-octane charms. As with the previous editions, you take control of a host of tiny alien-like creatures – alongside three crash-landed explorers – as they explore a vast natural world. Find food, fight off dangerous creatures and complete a series of missions to ensure your survival. This game introduces a whole host of brand new Pikmin styles, including flying Pikmin for faster exploration and ‘Rock’ Pikmin for breaking through tough surfaces. There’s also a sophisticated multiplayer option to keep you and your friends occupied for hours on end.
Out now for WII U
The latest edition of this classic series sticks to the timeless platformer style, allowing up to four players to simultaneously explore various levels, working together to defeat enemies, collect items and release helpless Teenies. A perfect game for sharing, each playable character has a unique set of skills, with many levels requiring active co-operation to get through. Almost fifteen years since Rayman first appeared on the positively ancient PlayStation 1, this series remains as addictive as ever.
Released Friday 30th August for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii-U and PC
Madden NFL 25
Another classic series getting an update, Madden NFL has long been one of the most popular American Football simulators on the market. This 25th anniversary edition – commemorating the release of ‘John Madden Football’, the first release in the series way back in 1988 – includes a host of innovative new features for some of the quickest, slickest football action yet. As it’s an anniversary edition, long-time fans of the series can also expect some sly nods to the slightly clunkier early days of the franchise.
Released Friday 30th August for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Bound to be hugely popular with the young and the young-at-heart, Disney Infinity allows you to take control of some of your favourite Disney and Pixar characters – including Captain Jack Sparrow, Mr Incredible and Sulley from Monsters Inc – to play through a number of pre-set campaigns or create your own adventure using the ‘Sandbox’ mode.
Disney Infinity comes with three character figures and a special pedestal. When you place the figure on the pedestal, that character will instantly appear in your game! Additional characters are also available to buy separately. Gameplay is simple enough to appeal to younger players, but varied enough to keep players of all ages entertained. Look for this game to be a big Christmas favourite this year.
