How to Choose a Digital Camera
Posted 11/11/2014 by BrightHouse Team
If you’re looking to get a new digital camera but have no idea where to begin, this guide will show you what types of camera are available and help you figure out which would be best for you.
How do you want to use your digital camera?
This is the first thing you should think about when choosing your camera, as different types are suited to different uses. If you want a camera for holiday snaps and family albums, then a simple compact camera is fine, but if you want to take photos that could be hung on the living room wall, then a bridge or DSLR camera would be better suited, as these provide higher quality pictures and have more manual controls.
What types of camera are there?
Compact Camera – This is the cheapest type of digital camera and is a good choice for beginners thanks to its variety of automatic modes for taking pictures in different conditions. These cameras often don’t feature a viewfinder though, which can make it harder to take pictures in bright sunlight.
Bridge Camera – This is half way between a compact camera and a full DSLR camera, providing fantastic quality photos while still being cheaper and often easier to use. The lens provides huge amounts of optical zoom, and there are manual controls to let you to fine tune your photos. It has similar styling to a DSLR camera, but is usually smaller.
Digital SLR Camera – This is the largest, most complex, and most expensive type of camera, giving you professional quality photos and a wide choice of lenses and accessories. As well as letting you just point and shoot, with a DSLR camera you can fine tune the way any photo is taken to get exactly the look you want.
Which camera do I need?
“I want a light, portable camera for taking pictures when I’m on holiday or out and about.”
- A compact camera would be best, as it has simple settings so you can take pictures easily, and its small size means you can carry it around in your pocket
“I want to take up photography as a hobby, as well as take great everyday photos. I need a good quality camera that allows me to adjust my pictures manually, but can still be carried around easily.”
- A bridge camera would be best as it produces high quality photos, and gives you much greater control over how you take your pictures. It’s also more compact than a full DSLR.
“I want professional quality photos, so I need lots of manual controls and a choice of lenses. It doesn’t matter how big the camera is.”
- If you want absolutely top notch results for professional photography, you need a DSLR or CRC camera, as they have the most manual controls and the ability to swap lenses.
