We've picked our favourites from the latest DVD and Blu-ray releases, as well as those coming out soon. There are some great films and TV shows on offer, several having just made the rounds through awards season, scooping up Oscars and BAFTAS all over the place.
Game of Thrones Season 3
Game of Thrones has become something of a cult since it first aired back in 2011, with the fourth season coming to our screens very soon. We’ve seen some pretty dramatic and shocking events so far, particularly in the last series, and we can only expect more excitement and tension to come. The rulers of Westeros are locked in battles of power and blood, while across the sea the rightful heir to the Iron Throne is making her mark on the world. There are dragons in the east, icy monsters in the north, but the scariest of all are those playing the game of thrones.

Fresh from multiple wins at the BAFTAS and the Oscars, Gravity has now floated its way onto DVD and Blu-ray. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star as astronauts attempting to return to Earth after a devastating mid-orbit collision. The film is a heart-pounding thriller, with clever and dramatic camera work that really gives a sense of the danger and 3D nature of the environment. Gravity was primarily filmed and produced in the UK, and won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, as well as being nominated for multiple Best Film awards, and Best Actress nominations for Sandra Bullock.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The second instalment of The Hunger Games quadrilogy (the last book adaptation will be split into two films); Catching Fire sees Katniss and Peeta, having just triumphed in the 74th games, embarking on their victory tour through the districts. They discover that things have changed while they were in the arena, however – the mood of the inhabitants of Panem has shifted to rebellion, and the Capitol is clamping down with force. In an attempt to stamp out the fire of revolution started by Katniss, the 75th Hunger Games are going to be something special, and deadly.

This computer animated musical from Disney tells the story of a princess setting off on an epic quest to find her sister, who has locked the kingdom in eternal winter. She is joined by Kristoff, a mountain man, along with his pet reindeer Sven, and Olaf, a snowman who dreams of seeing summer. This latest release from Disney has been praised as being on par with the films of the Disney Renaissance period such as The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. Frozen scooped up both the Oscar and the BAFTA for Best Animated Film.
Released March 31st on DVD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray 3D
Saving Mr Banks
This Disney film actually tells the true story of the creation of another Disney film – Mary Poppins. The Australian-British writer P.L. Travers created the character of Mary Poppins in her children’s books, and had been approached by Walt Disney many times with the intention of adapting the stories into films. Despite her misgivings, she finally agrees to let him do so, but is immediately at odds with the creative team tasked with writing the film. Played by Emma Thompson, Travers tries to make the studio understand the personal connection she has with the characters and the story, and help them appreciate their meaning. Though still very much disapproving of the altered character of Mary Poppins, as well as hating the animated sequences, Travers (in a slight departure from reality) eventually warms to the film at its premier.
