Christmas TV 2014

The Christmas season is well and truly upon us, with the day itself only a couple of weeks away. One of the best things about the season is all the great TV, from festive films to Christmas specials, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Here’s our pick of Christmas TV 2014:
For a family film that will delight both kids and adults, tune in to Toy Story 3 at 6:25pm on BBC1. This final instalment of the classic Pixar trilogy sees Andy go off to college, and the fate of Woody, Buzz, and the other toys hangs in the balance. Lots of laughs and a few tears too.
Harry Hill stars in a brand new family drama, The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm on BBC1 at 8:30pm, along with David Mitchel and Ben Miller, in a story about a mad professor and his bizarre experiments.
As is tradition, Christmas Day itself brings a selection of special episodes from our favourite programmes, including Strictly Come Dancing at 5pm on BBC1, with six of the show’s most memorable stars returning to the dance floor to impress the judges, including Rachel Stevens, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and Louis Smith.
Just after on BBC1 at 6:15pm is the Doctor Who Christmas special, which sees the Doctor and Clara trapped in the freezing Arctic with danger looming on all sides, though they do get some help from a jolly man in a red suit.
Switch over to ITV1 at 9pm to see the Downton Abbey special. This episode has been promised to be more Christmassy than last year’s rather sunny affair, with an actual Christmas tree and everything. Expect scandals and secrets as well as perfectly wrapped presents, too.
If you want something a bit traditional and heart-warming in the middle of the day, perhaps to keep the kids and guests entertained just before dinner is ready, The Snowman is on at 12:45pm, followed by The Snowman and the Snowdog at 1:20pm on Channel 4. This classic cartoon and its more recent recreation have become as much a fixture of Christmas Day TV as the Queen’s Christmas Message at 3pm on BBC1.
At 6:55pm on BBC1 is The Boy in the Dress, an adaptation of David Walliam’s children’s book, with a stellar cast including Jennifer Saunders, Meera Syall, and a cameo from Kate Moss.
If you want a blockbuster film to round off the day, Marvel’s Avengers Assemble is on BBC1 at 8:30pm, featuring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Scarlett Johansson in one of the biggest films of 2012.
