Extended Warranties

The following information may help you decide whether or not to purchase an extended warranty (such as Optional Service Cover) for any domestic electrical goods that you purchase.

Your statutory rights

Whether or not you purchase an extended warranty, consumers have various statutory rights that apply to the purchase of your electrical goods. These include the right to claim for a refund, repair or replacement for up to six years (five in Scotland) if your electrical goods were not of satisfactory quality or fit for their purpose when they were sold to you. Within the first six months, the burden of proof is on the retailer to establish that the goods you purchased were of satisfactory quality and fit for their purpose. After the first six months you will have to prove that the goods had a fault when sold to you. For further information about your statutory rights contact your local authority Trading Standards Department or Citizens Advice Bureau, or visit www.consumercredit.gov.uk.

Other extended warranty providers

We offer Optional Service Cover for our products. Extended warranties may also be available from other high street outlets, insurance companies and other providers. Some household contents insurance policies provide cover for accidental damage, fire or theft of electrical goods. However, an excess may be payable and a claim may affect the cost of subsequent insurance premiums.

You do not have to purchase an extended warranty (such as Optional Service Cover) at the same time as you purchase electrical goods.

Termination

You can terminate your Optional Service Cover at any time on giving 7 days' notice to BrightHouse. Your Optional Service Cover is renewable each time your payment is due. If the amount due is not paid the Optional Service Cover will lapse.

Claims

Optional Service Cover will continue if you make a claim unless BrightHouse or a Technician thinks that it would be unreasonable or impracticable to repair your electrical product and BrightHouse is unable to replace your electrical product, in which case BrightHouse may end your Optional Service Cover.

Financial protection

Optional Service Cover for electrical goods (other than mobile phones) is provided by Caversham Finance Limited without any arrangements to keep extended warranty funds separate from the rest of the business in case Caversham Finance Limited gets into financial trouble. The Financial Services Compensation Scheme does not apply to Optional Service Cover provided by Caversham Finance Limited for electrical goods (other than mobile phones).

Optional Service Cover for mobile phones (and non-electrical goods) is provided by a Maltese based insurance company, Caversham Insurance (Malta) Limited. The Financial Services Compensation Scheme does apply to Optional Service Cover provided by Caversham Insurance (Malta) Limited for mobile phones (and non-electrical goods) which means that if the provider gets into financial trouble, money from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme will be paid to you so you will not lose out
